Mike Crawley, auteur de Shadows, est né dans le Kent, en Angleterre. Il vit maintenant à Hertfordshire. Il a travaillé comme photographe freelance, spécialisé dans les photos de voyages, nature, style de vie et les photographies de gens, après une longue et brillante carrière avec Kodak Ltd en tant que chercheur scientifique en imagerie. Son intérêt pour la photographie de femmes a commencé par hasard quand il a suivi des cours du soir en photographie en 1988. Depuis lors, il a obtenu plusieurs distinctions, dont une bourse de la Royal Photographic Society, et a fait évolué son propre style et sa passion pour la photographie de belles femmes. Il est également un contributeur de photothèques et a eu ces travaux publiés partout dans le monde dans les livres, magazines et les médias.

Maintenant que l’auto-édition est de plus en plus facile à réaliser, il vise à préparer une sélection de livres photographiques sur divers sujets, principalement pour sa propre satisfaction personnelle, mais aussi dans l’espoir de vendre quelques livres et aider à financer ses nombreux projets photographiques.

WeLovePhoto – Could you tell us more about you as a photographer and your style: what’s your background in photography? When did you start and why? Who are the photographers who inspire you the most? What specific material did you use for this photo set?

Fine art nude photography is my passion and I have been involved in this area of photography for over 25 years. It all started in 1988 when I decided to take some photography modules at my local college evening classes. The module which took me by storm was the portraiture module. I loved it and I haven’t looked back since those early days. Following on from that I gained a Licentiateship (LRPS) and a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS), been the President of the Kodak Photographic Society in Harrow and competed in many of the local, National and International Salons and Exhibitions, and have had numerous publications. The list of photographers who have inspired me over the years is legion and it would be wrong to give a long list of well-known photographers, because many of those that have inspired me have been less well known or experienced. However, the photographer (mentor and friend) who completely changed my way of thinking, and started me looking at photography as an art form, was Cornish based photographer David Penprase. He has probably been the biggest influence on the way I work. Currently, I’m compiling several books on various aspects of my work. “Shadows” was a logical niche group of images, which fit together well. They weren’t shot specifically for this book but have gathered and developed over many years. It’s an area of my photography that I like very much, using natural light, shadow and the naked female form. Other similar “niche” books that I’ve self published over the last couple of years are “Tush”, “Twin Peaks”, “Body Projection” and “Elven Nudes”, which you can see on my Blurb bookshop.

La photographie de nu artistique est ma passion et je me suis passionné dans ce domaine de la photographie depuis plus de 25 ans. Tout a commencé en 1988 quand j’ai décidé de prendre quelques cours de photographie à mon collège en cours du soir. Le cours qui m’a très fort attiré était le portrait et je ne l’ai jamais abandonné depuis mes plus tendres années.
Après avoir obtenu une licence (PRL) et une bourse de la Royal Photographic Society (PRF), j’ai pris la fonction de président de la Kodak Photographic Society à Harrow et j’ai participé à de nombreux salons et expositions locales, nationales et internationales ainsi que de nombreuses publications.
La liste des photographes qui m’ont inspiré au fil des ans est légion et il serait erroné de
donner une longue liste de photographes bien connus, parce que beaucoup de ceux qui m’ont inspiré le sont moins. Cependant, le photographe (mentor et ami) qui a complètement changé ma façon de penser, et m’a permis de regarder la photographie comme une forme d’art, est le photographe David Penprase. Il a probablement été mon plus grand influent sur la façon dont je travaille.
Actuellement, je combine plusieurs livres sur divers aspects de mon travail. « Shadows (Ombres) » est une suite logique de groupe d’images, qui s’emboîtent bien. Elles n’ont pas été prises spécifiquement pour ce livre, mais se sont accumulées et développées depuis de nombreuses années. C’est un domaine de ma photographie que j’aime beaucoup, en utilisant la lumière naturelle, l’ombre et la forme d’une femme nue. WeLovePhoto – What’s the inspiration behind the photo set in your book: why did you start this project? What message did you want to convey? What inspired you?

As I mentioned earlier the inspiration for taking the images has been ongoing for many years, but the inspiration to collate all the images into a tangible collection of my favourite pictures has been more recent. This project was, and is, primarily for my own benefit, but I hope that other people will also enjoy looking at my work.

Comme je l’ai mentionné ci-dessus, mon inspiration pour ce type de prise de vue est continue depuis de nombreuses années, mais la source d’inspiration pour rassembler toutes les images dans une collection tangible de mes photos préférées a été plus récente. Ce projet a été, et est, surtout pour mon propre intérêt, mais j’espère que d’autres personnes auront également le plaisir de regarder mon travail.

WeLovePhoto – Could you tell us about your experience publishing books? What criteria did you use to select pictures and define the structure, etc.? Why self-publishing? What steps would you recommend others to follow when creating a new book?

My first experience of book publication was when I had seven images selected for “The Mammoth Book of Erotic Photography” in 2001. I didn’t have to do too much apart from supply the images. The following year (2002), however, the publishers David & Charles approached me and we produced my first solo book called “Photographing the Nude”. I had much more personal involvement in the making of this book, and it is from this experience that I became more interest in publishing. My interest in self-publishing was later, in 2010, when the means to do it became much easier. It was the tenth anniversary of my website, which featured an “Image of the Month”, so I decided to create a self-published book of all these images, using Blurb.com software. The picture selection and structure was already mapped out for me, (120 pictures in month/year order) so this was relative easy to construct. I was pleased with the results and proceeded to publish more books this way. “Shadows” is my ninth art and glamour photography book that I’ve made in the intervening three years and I have several more in the pipeline. These, as I mentioned earlier, have been “niche” topics or model monographs.

I think my best recommendation when making photography based books would be to keep the subject matter tightly focussed on a particular topic or theme. Preparing and thoughtfully selecting the images beforehand, and taking special care of presentation and layout is also essential. Ensure images facing each other in the book complement each other.

Ma première expérience de publication d’un livre a démarré en 2001, en ayant sélectionné sept images pour le livre « The Mammoth : Livre de photographie érotique. Je n’ai pas eu beaucoup à faire à part fournir les images.

L’année suivante (en 2002), par contre, les éditeurs David & Charles m’ont contacté et nous avons produit mon premier livre en solo appelé « Photographier le nu ». J’avais beaucoup plus d’implication personnelle dans la réalisation de ce livre, et c’est à partir de cette expérience que je me suis plus intéressé à l’édition. Mon intérêt pour l’auto-édition est apparue plus tard, en 2010, lorsque c’est devenu beaucoup plus facile de le faire. Ce fut le dixième anniversaire de mon site web, présentant l’ « Image du mois », alors j’ai décidé de créer un livre auto-édité de toutes ces images, en utilisant le logiciel Blurb.com. La sélection des images et la structure fut déjà toute tracée pour moi, (120 photos triées par mois / année), donc c’était relativement facile à construire. J’étais content du résultat et je me suis mis à publier plus de livres de cette façon. « Shadows » est mon neuvième livre d’art et de photographies glamours que j’ai réalisé pendant les trois années consécutives et j’en ai d’autres dans le pipeline. Ceux-ci, comme je l’ai mentionné plus tôt, ont été des sujets de «niche» ou modèles de monographie.

Je pense que ma meilleure recommandation pour les livres de photographies serait de garder le sujet du livre étroitement axé sur un thème bien spécifique et particulier. La préparation à l’avance et la sélection minutieuse des images, et soigner la présentation et mise en page est également essentielle. S’assurer que les images l’une à côté de l’autre se complètent mutuellement dans le livre.

WeLovePhoto – What are your next steps: do you have any future photography or publishing projects in the pipeline?

As I intimated earlier, I have several more self-published books in the pipeline involving my fine art and glamour work. I’m keeping them under wraps at the moment but it shouldn’t be too long before book 10 is published! An area I haven’t mentioned here is my commercial work involving travel and/or nature photography. This is the other hat I wear! I’ve self-published four books in this area so far, which are also in my Blurb bookstore, and I’ll probably also be producing more books along these lines in the future.

A future option would be to work with a publisher(s) to make some of my work available in a more accessible, commercial book form. Self-publishing is great, and the quality is excellent, but the downside is the high cost of print-on-demand technology.

Comme je l’ai laissé entendre, j’ai plusieurs livres auto-édités dans le pipeline impliquant mon travail artistique de photographie glamour. Je les garde au frais pour le moment mais cela ne deviendrait pas être trop long avant que le livre N°10 soit publié !

Un domaine que je n’ai pas encore mentionné, c’est mon travail commercial sur la photographie de voyage et de nature.
C’est l’autre casquette que je porte ! J’ai auto-publié quatre livres dans ce domaine à ce jour, qui sont aussi dans ma bibliothèque Blurb , et je vais probablement aussi produire plus de livres à l’avenir.
Une option pour l’avenir serait de travailler avec un éditeur (s) afin de rendre mon travail plus accessible, sous forme de livre commercial. L’auto-édition est super, et la qualité est excellente, mais l’inconvénient est le coût élevé d’impression à la demande.

Bio : Mike Crawley was born in Kent, England. He now lives in Hertfordshire, working as a freelance photographer, specialising in travel, nature, lifestyle and people photography, after a long and distinguished career with Kodak Ltd. as an imaging research scientist. His interest in photographing women started by chance when he attended photography evening classes in 1988. Since then he has gained several distinctions, including a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society, and evolved his own inimitable style and a passion for photographing beautiful women. He is also a contributor to photographic stock libraries and has had work published all around the world in books, magazines and news media. Now self-publication is becoming easier to achieve he aims to prepare a selection of photographic books on various topics, mainly for his own personal satisfaction, but also to hopefully sell a few books and help fund his many photography projects.
