WeLovePhoto – Could you tell us more about you as a photographer and your style: what’s your background in photography? When did you start and why? Who are the photographers who inspire you the most? What specific material did you use for this photo set?
My background:
It all started long ago… I was only 4 years old when I received a gift from my Godparents, a little stuffed seal pup. My Mom explained that the seal pup was coming from a very cold place and it lived on and under the Polar ice. I was mesmerized by those stories. Thereafter, I dreamed to be able to see them in their natural environment.
I always loved animals since I was a kid and I grew up with the idea to become a vet. Things in life don’t always go the way you plan them and in fact I ended up to become a Swiss certified expert in finance and accounting but today I’m a professional Photographer specialized in the Polar Regions. Loving nature and wildlife I started travelling and in 24 years I have visited more than 65 countries with camera in hand.
After my masters I opened my own accounting office. With a good business plan and organizing skills I managed to be able to match my passion for travel, nature and photography with my day job commitments. Then in 2006, the big decision: I sold the accounting business and went full time photographer.
My inspiration:
Mother Nature and the creatures that inhabit this planet are my main inspiration. Amongst the best interpreter of this beauty who continuously inspires me with their amazing work:
Paul Nicklen for his amazing understanding of the Polar Regions and underwater photography. Cherry Alexander, Tui de Roy and Mark Jones for their Works in Antarctica; Norbert Rosing and Thomas Mangelsen for their amazing images and knowledge of Polar bears. Jonathan and Angie Scott for their sensitivity and master in communications; Martin Hartley for his extreme expeditions in the Arctic Ocean to support science. And last but not least my MENTOR Darrell Gulin an incredible photographer who has followed, guided and supported me during the past 14 years. I wouldn’t have managed without him.… and many many others…! It is a BIG FAMILY!
My style:
In the years I’ve developed a very personal characteristic style. I love the White with its nuances. I never do composite images but I work the image in post-production with curves and levels in order to restore the details faded due to the overexposure. As far as compositions I focus on simplicity and here I would like to mention two relevant quotes: « Simplicity is nature’s first step, and the last of art ». Equipment:
I am part of the Nikon Ambassadors team. Euphemistically speaking let’s say I don’t travel light.I have been privileged to get assignments in some of the remotest places on earth. Quite often logistics is a big deal and expenses are huge. In these situations you really have to be ready and expect the unexpected, therefore, I usually carry all my equipment with me. This means my tripod with ball head, flash, two camera bodies, and all my lenses from the 16mm fisheye to a 400 mm telephoto. Occasionally, when shooting wildlife in the Arctic I’ll also take along a 600 mm.
WeLovePhoto – What’s the inspiration behind the photo set in your book: why did you start this project? What message did you want to convey? What inspired you?
My philosophy in life is live your dreams and follow your heart… so specializing by focusing on a particular subject is not a choice it is a question of doing what you are passionate about. The key of success is doing what you love with passion. I love the extremes of our planet: the Polar Regions. Antarctica in particular is by all means the most representative. It is the highest, the windiest, the driest and the coldest of all continents. In almost two decades of polar explorations I have joined 22 expeditions to Antarctica and 24 to the Arctic, most of them on research vessels and icebreakers, one on a sailing boat, some overland and in 2006 I joined a Russian expedition to the North Pole on skies. Many times I tried to understand this irresistible attraction to the Poles, which I would define almost as an addiction or obsession. These extreme adventures transport me out of my ordinary worldliness and lead me to discover my own primitive instincts. The Polar Regions, with their harsh and unforgiving environment, have the power to bring back the wild animal that resides deep inside all of us, awaking innate capacities of adaptations and survival in extreme situations. By returning to the foundation of existence, I feel comfortable by simply following the rhythm of nature, which inspires deep respect and awareness for the importance of these delicate wilderness areas.
WeLovePhoto – Could you tell us about your experience publishing books? What criteria did you use to select pictures and define the structure, etc.? Why self-publishing? What steps would you recommend others follow when creating a new book?
In 2008 under the patronage of the International Polar Year and in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, her work on Polar Regions and global warming issues was shaped into a solo educational exhibit/talk/book aimed at young people.
“POLAR WONDERS: Photographs from the Ends of the Earth” is a celebration of the beauty and diversity of some of the most remote and fragile ecosystems on our planet.
The exhibition has been successfully displayed in various indoor and outdoor venues in Switzerland and now Daisy is taking it around Europe and abroad. Among the most prestigious venues – “Polar Wonders: Photographs from the Ends of the Earth” – has been displayed at the National Geographic Gallery in London and Singapore and at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles (only talk).
The book is the catalogue of the National Geographic Exhibit held in London and Singapore in 2010. The image selection was made based on the actual exhibit. I decided to self publish because of the limited amount of time I had and also because wanted to have the maximum freedom in the layout and text. The most difficult part in self-publishing a book is to have a very clear vision of the purpose of the book and the consequent image selection. Spending a lot of time in the initial phase will save you a lot of time and confusion later on.
WeLovePhoto – What are your next steps: do you have any future photography or publishing projects in the pipeline?
I am currently working on a new project talk/exhibit/book on bears of North America. Hopefully by fall 2014 will be ready.

Tout a commencé il y a bien longtemps … Je n’avais que 4 ans quand j’ai reçu un cadeau de mes mon parrain et marraine, un petit phoque en peluche. Ma maman m’expliqua que le bébé phoque vient d’un endroit très froid et qu’il vit sur et sous la glace polaire. J’étais fascinée par ses histoires. Par la suite, je rêvais d’être en mesure de les voir dans leur environnement naturel.
J’ai toujours aimé les animaux depuis que je suis gamine et j’ai grandi avec l’idée de devenir vétérinaire. Les choses dans la vie ne vont pas toujours de la façon dont vous envisagez et, en fait j’ai fini par devenir une experte suisse en finance et comptabilité, mais aujourd’hui je suis une photographe professionnelle spécialisée dans les régions polaires. Aimant la nature et la faune, j’ai commencé à voyager et, en 24 ans, j’ai visité plus de 65 pays avec un appareil photo à la main.
Après ma maîtrise, j’ai ouvert mon propre cabinet comptable. Avec un bon business plan et gràce à mon sens de l’organisation, j’ai réussi à être en mesure de répondre à ma passion pour les voyages, la nature et la photographie en parallèle avec mes engagements journalier de travail. Puis en 2006, la grande décision: j’ai vendu l’entreprise de comptabilité et suis devenue photographe à temps plein.
Mon inspiration:
Mère Nature et les espèces qui peuplent cette planète sont ma principale source d’inspiration. Parmi les meilleurs interprètes de cette beauté qui m’inspirent continuellement avec leur incroyable travail photographique:
Paul Nicklen pour sa compréhension exceptionnelle des Régions polaires et sa photographie sous-marine. Cherry Alexander, Tui De Roy et Mark Jones pour leurs travaux sur l’Antarctique; Norbert Rosing et Thomas Mangelsen pour leurs images et leurs connaissances fabuleuses des ours polaires. Jonathan et Angie Scott pour leur sensibilité et leur maîtrise en communications, Martin Harley pour ses expéditions extrêmes dans l’océan Arctique et son soutien pour la science. Et enfin, Darrell Gulin, un photographe incroyable qui m’a suivie, guidée et soutenue au cours des 14 dernières années. Je n’aurais pas réussi sans lui …. et bien d’autres encore …! C’est une grande famille!
Mon style:
Au cours des années, j’ai développé un style photographique très personnel. J’adore le blanc avec ses nuances. Je ne fais jamais des images composées mais je travaille l’image en post-production avec les courbes et les niveaux afin de restaurer les détails disparus en raison de la surexposition. En ce qui concerne les compositions, je me concentre sur la simplicité et à ce propos je voudrais mentionner deux citations pertinentes: «La simplicité est la première étape de la nature, et le dernier de l’art». Mon équipement:
Je fais partie de l’équipe des Ambassadeurs Nikon. Par euphémisme on pourrait dire que je ne voyage pas light. J’ai eu le privilège d’obtenir des missions photographiques dans certains endroits les plus reculés de la planète. Très souvent, la logistique est très complexe et les coûts sont énormes. Dans ces situations, vous devez vraiment être prêts et vous attendre à l’inattendu, donc, j’ai l’habitude de porter tout mon matériel avec moi. Cela signifie que mon trépied avec rotule, flash, deux boîtiers reflex, et toutes mes lentilles du fisheye 16mm à un téléobjectif 400 mm. Parfois, lorsque je photographie la faune dans l’Arctique, j’emporte un 600 mm.
Ma philosophie..
Ma philosophie dans la vie est de vivre vos rêves et de suivre votre coeur … alors se spécialiser en mettant l’accent sur un sujet particulier n’est pas un choix c’est une question de faire ce dont vous êtes passionné !
La clé du succès est de faire ce que vous aimez avec passion.
J’aime les extrêmes de notre planète: les régions polaires. L’Antarctique est particulièrement une des régions les plus représentatives. Il est le plus élevé, le plus venteux, le plus sec et le plus froid de tous les continents.
Après preque deux décennies d’explorations polaires J’ai rejoint 22 expéditions en Antarctique et 24 à l’Arctique, la plupart d’entre-elles sur des navires de recherche et des brise-glaces, l’une sur un bateau à voile, certaines terrestres et en 2006 j’ai rejoint une expédition russe au pôle Nord sur skis.
Plusieurs fois, j’ai essayé de comprendre cette attirance irrésistible pour les Pôles, que je définirais presque comme une addiction ou obsession. Ces aventures extrêmes me transportent hors de ma mondanité ordinaire et m’amènent à découvrir mes propres instincts primitifs. Les régions polaires, avec leur environnement rude et impitoyable, ont le pouvoir de ramener l’animal sauvage qui réside au fond de chacun de nous, réveillant les capacités innées de l’adaptation et de survie dans des situations extrêmes. En retournant à l’origine de l’existence, je me sens à l’aise en suivant simplement le rythme de la nature, qui inspire le respect et la conscience profonde de l’importance de ces zones sauvages délicates.
Mon expérience du livre
En 2008, sous le patronage de L’International Polar Year et en collaboration avec le World Wildlife Fund, mon travail sur les régions polaires et les problèmes de réchauffement de la planète a été façonné dans un livre, une exposition, une conférence destinés aux jeunes.
« POLAR WONDERS« : Photographies des extrémités de la terre» est une célébration de la beauté et la diversité de certains écosystèmes les plus reculés et fragiles de notre planète.
L’exposition a été présentée avec grand succès dans différents lieux en Suisse et maintenant autour de l’Europe et à l’étranger.
Parmi les lieux les plus prestigieux –POLAR WONDERS a été exposée à la National Geographic Gallery à Londres et à Singapour et à l’Espace Annenberg de Los Angeles (seulement la conférence).
Le livre POLAR WONDERS est le catalogue de l’exposition National Geographic qui s’est tenue à Londres et à Singapour en 2010. La sélection d’images a été faite sur base de l’exposition réelle. J’ai fait le choix de l’auto-édition en raison de la quantité limitée de temps que j’ai eu et aussi parce que je voulais avoir le maximum de liberté dans la mise en page et le texte.
La partie la plus difficile dans l’auto-édition d’un livre est d’avoir une vision très claire de l’objectif de l’ouvrage et la sélection d’images qui en résulte.
Passer beaucoup de temps dans la phase initiale vous permettra d’économiser beaucoup de temps et éviter toute confusion.
Mes projets futurs :
Je travaille actuellement sur un nouveau projet de conférence/exposition/livre sur les ours d’Amérique du Nord. Espérons que d’ici l’automne 2014 il sera prêt !
Le photographe français de mode et de publicité, Dominique Derisbourg, réalise ses images avec une esthétique très picturale. Son attrait pour la peinture imprègne progressivement ses travaux photographiques. Le titre qu’il a choisi pour son livre symbolise parfaitement sa démarche: impression de la lumière, impressions ressenties, impressions subjectives de la réalité… Le tirage numérique représente un magnifique moyen d’expression qui lui permet de jouer à l’infini de ses textures de papiers et de couleurs. Son travail a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions.
professionnelle a été durant plus de 20 ans la photo de mode et publicitaire tout en travaillant à des projets personnels, Ayant travaillé durant de longues années pour un même magazine de mode en Suisse, je devais changer de style et de technique, et souvent pour ne pas lasser le lecteur. Maintenant je travaille plus dans la nature morte et des expos. D’où la sortie de mon livre IMPRESSIONS.
